Ramesh Batra, MD, MA, FRCS, FACS
Ramesh Batra, MD, is a distinguished transplant surgeon, academic leader, and clinical innovator with expertise in liver and kidney transplantation, living donor transplantation, transplant ethics, and medical technology development. He joined the University of Arizona from Yale University School of Medicine, where he served as Director of the Liver Transplant Program and Living Donor Liver Transplantation at Yale New Haven Hospital.
With over a decade of surgical experience—including the Mayo Clinic, Loyola University Medical Center, and the National Health Service (UK)—Dr. Batra is nationally recognized for his leadership in transplant medicine. He currently serves as Chair of Surgery and Liver Transplantation for the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and has received numerous honors, including the 2023 ASTS Rising Star in Transplantation Award and the 2025 DARPA Gold Award for Innovation.
Dr. Batra’s research interests include the application of machine learning in organ allocation and strategies to expand access to transplantation among underserved populations. As Chief of the Division of Abdominal Transplant Surgery at the University of Arizona, he brings a forward-looking vision focused on multidisciplinary collaboration, surgical excellence, and innovation in transplantation science.
