The Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) is a collaborative clinical and research alliance dedicated to advancing care of the diabetic foot and preventing amputations in North America and worldwide.

A person develops diabetes when their body is unable to maintain a normal level of sugar in the blood.  Insulin, the hormone that regulates the level of sugar, is either not used properly by the body or it is produced in inadequate amounts. When this occurs, diabetes is the result.

There are currently more than 30 million known cases of diabetes in America, and the number grows by approximately one-half million annually. Experts estimate that there are as many American with undiagnosed diabetes.

One of the most serious complications of diabetes is loss of circulation to the feet. Many people with diabetes also have reduced sensation in their feet. Together, these problems put patients with diabetes at greater risk for foot ulcers and infections that, left untreated, can require amputation. However, most amputations due to diabetes are preventable.
