Medical Student Education
The Department of Surgery provides medical students at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson exposure to various surgical sub-specialties.
We are committed to the education of future physicians and training of surgeons. The third year medical student clerkship offers experiences with patients and education of surgical principles. Medical student electives for third and fourth year students are offered in all the surgical specialties.
3rd Year Clerkship
The Surgery Clerkship is one of eight required clerkships at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.
Surgery Electives
The surgical subspecialty electives allows students to focus three or four weeks on specialties such as breast, cardiothoracic, pediatric, plastic, transplantation, trauma, vascular and endovascular surgery.
Visiting Students
The Department of Surgery at the University of Arizona follows the guidelines for visiting medical students as described by The University of Arizona College of Medicine Tucson.
Transition to Residency
Department of Surgery faculty and general surgery residents help run an annual Transition to Residency Bootcamp for graduating MS4 students pursuing a surgery residency. The program includes Q&A sessions with residents as well as hands-on training to practice basic surgical skills.
Observership/Shadowing
The Clinical Shadowing/Observership Program is an opportunity for individuals interested in medicine to observe physicians from different specialties.
