Vascular, Endovascular and Podiatric Research and Innovation

The Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns, and Acute Care Surgery is committed to not only bringing the most up-to-date care to our patients, but also to pioneering new techniques and technologies to advance available treatment options.

The Weinkauf Lab

The Weinkauf Lab, led by Associate Professor of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Craig Weinkauf, MD, focuses on translational science to better understand and treat patients with cardiovascular disease.

One of the key areas of focus in on cardiovascular brain health, using longitudinal clinical studies and a wide array of advanced brain imaging, blood flow imaging and neurocognitive testing to quantify the relationship between carotid artery stenosis and brain structure and function.

The Zhou Lab

The Zhou Lab, led by Professor of Surgery Dr. Wei Zhou, has built a translational research program with a focus on carotid disease outcome and mechanistic investigation on atherosclerosis. She is the PI for a multi-site trans-disciplinary study to investigate cognitive outcome of carotid intervention with the goal of identifying appropriate patients for intervention. She is also a site-PI for multiple clinical trials.

  1. Role of Carotid Disease in Cognitive Impairment and Dementia
  2. Carotid Revascularization and Medical Therapy for Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis Trial (CREST-2)
  3. Carotid Revascularization and Medical Management for Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis Trial - Hemodynamics (CREST-H)
  4. Long-term Observational Extension of Participants in the CREST-2 Randomized Clinical Trial
  5. Diabetic Foot Ulcer Consortium Clinical Research Unit
  6. IMProving mobility After revasCulaizaTion in peripheral artery disease: the IMPACT PAD Trial
  7. ObJective Analysis to GaUge EVAR Outcomes Through Randomization (Alto RCT)
  8. SaveFistulaS Study
