The University of Arizona's nationally and internationally recognized Department of Surgery provides care to a diverse population in its seven divisions including Abdominal Transplantation; Cardiothoracic Surgery; General Surgery; Pediatric Surgery; Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns and Acute Care Surgery; Surgical Oncology; and Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.

Department of Surgery Divisions
Abdominal Transplant
Our surgeons have been helping patients in need of organ transplants for more than 40 years. Our transplant surgeons and physicians have specific expertise in transplants in areas such as diabetes mellitus, with a focus on pancreas and kidney transplants; multiple organ transplants (e.g., pancreas-kidney, liver-kidney, heart-kidney, lung-kidney); and transplants for hepatitis or for liver and bile duct cancer.
Cardiothoracic Surgery
The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is dedicated to excellence in three areas: patient care, clinical and basic research on diseases affecting our patients, and education of the next generation of cardiothoracic surgeons. Since our division was established in 1977, it has developed into an internationally recognized program, providing state of the art care in heart and lung transplants and in cardiac assist devices.
General Surgery
Our team of general surgeons at the University of Arizona Department of Surgery and Banner - University Medicine treats conditions ranging from routine to rare, including hernias, appendicitis, gallbladder disease, and GERD (Severe heartburn). We also offer minimally invasive procedures to reduce scarring and shorten hospital stay.
Pediatric Surgery
Learning that your child needs surgery can be a frightening moment, but our team within the Division of Pediatric Surgery, alongside our partners across Banner - University Medicine and the University of Arizona, are committed to providing your child and your family with the support, care and resources you need to navigate this stressful time as smoothly and comfortably as possible.
Surgical Oncology
Surgical oncologists in the Department of Surgery partner with the University of Arizona Cancer Center - the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center headquartered in and serving the entire state of Arizona - to bring the latest treatments to those fighting cancer.
Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns and Acute Care Surgery
The Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns, and Acute Care Surgery serves as the regional referral source for the comprehensive management of critically ill and injured patients at Banner University Medical Center - Tucson, the only ACS-designated Level 1 Trauma Center in Southern Arizona.
Vascular and Endovascular Surgery
The Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery is nationally recognized for its expertise in treating conditions of the circulatory system and advancing treatments and technology in the fields of vascular and endovascular surgery and podiatry through research and clinical trials.

Minimally Invasive, Robotic and Bariatric Surgery
The Section of Minimally Invasive, Robotic and Bariatric Surgery specializes in using techniques that tend to result in shorter hospital stay, less pain and scarring, less risk of wound infections, less blood loss and fewer transfusions, faster recovery, and ultimately, quicker return to normal activities.
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
The Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology is a team of reconstructive plastic surgeons dedicated to the delivery of exemplary reconstructive surgical care; the education of faculty, trainees and support personnel; and the participation in clinical research and quality initiatives to further improve the care delivered to those we serve.
Thoracic Surgery
The Section of Thoracic Surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery specializes in the surgical treatment of the chest area including the lungs, esophagus, trachea, diaphragm, chest wall, and mediastinum.
