Department of Surgery Welcomes Barbra Miller, MD, to the Division of Surgical Oncology

The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson Department of Surgery, is delighted to welcome Barbra Miller, MD, to the Division of Surgical Oncology as Clinical Professor of Surgery. In addition to her faculty appointment, Miller will lead the newly established Endocrine Tumor Program and serve as Medical Director of Surgical Operations at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson.

Miller is a nationally and internationally recognized endocrine surgeon. She completed her medical school training at University of Cincinnati, general surgery residency in the Parkland Hospital and University of Texas – Southwestern system, and fellowship training in endocrine surgery at University of Michigan. She initially joined the faculty of University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio before returning to the University of Michigan where she spent nearly 15 years contributing to the development of the world-class Endocrine Surgery and Endocrine Oncology programs. Most recently, Miller developed and led the Comprehensive Adrenal Program and served as Director of Clinical Operations for the Division of Surgical Oncology at Ohio State. 

With deep expertise in operational efficiency, quality improvement, and program development, Miller has advanced innovative, patient-centered models of care that support clinical, research, and educational missions. Her clinical practice encompasses the surgical management of thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and other neuroendocrine tumors. She has pioneered destination programs for patients traveling long distances, introduced new surgical techniques across multiple institutions, and is skilled in open, minimally invasive, robotic, and transcutaneous ablative procedures. She is widely recognized as a resource and mentor to surgeons across the country.

Miller’s research focuses on clinical outcomes in endocrine surgery, advancing surgical techniques, improving safety and quality, and multidisciplinary translational research. She has published extensively, delivered invited lectures worldwide, and influenced surgical practice on a national and international scale. Her leadership roles include serving on the executive councils of both the American and International Associations of Endocrine Surgeons, as Secretary of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons (2022–2025), and as Chair of the Operative Standards for Adrenal Cancer Surgery. She has also contributed to national guidelines, including the AAES Thyroidectomy Guidelines and the forthcoming North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society’s Advanced Adrenal Cancer Guidelines.

Miller looks forward to serving the Banner and University of Arizona faculty, staff, and trainees, and in particular partnering with her colleagues in Endocrine Surgery, Endocrinology, and related specialties to provide state-of-the-art care to patients seeking treatment at BUMC-T.
