Nelson attended the University of California at San Diego for undergraduate training in mechanical engineering and the University of Utah for master's study in biomedical engineering. He received his medical degree from the University of Utah and completed surgical residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. He then went on to complete a fellowship in acute care surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, NC.
Nelson's clinical interests include predicting patient outcomes after thoracic trauma, characterization of resident readiness for emergency surgery, and engineering innovations in surgery.
