Juan F. Ortiz, MD, is a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Abdominal Transplant.

Prior to coming to the University of Arizona, Dr. Ortiz completed his fellowship in transplant surgery and hepatobiliary surgery at Northwestern University. He conducted his general surgery residency at the University of California - Riverside, where he was awarded Chief Resident of the Year in 2019.

Dr. Ortiz's clinical interests include liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation, as well as hepatobiliary surgery. He is interested in health outcomes research, particularly in health care disparities. Dr. Ortiz is also interested in surgical resident and medical student education, and he was awarded the Resident as Teacher Award as a transplant surgery fellow at Northwestern.

Dr. Ortiz received his Medical Degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine. He has presented a wide range of research at various academic medicine gatherings, and he participated in Harvard Medical School's Visiting Research and Internship Program.

Before entering the medical field, Dr. Ortiz completed a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of Washington. Hailing from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, Dr. Ortiz speaks fluent English and Spanish. He believes that every patient should be treated as a whole unique individual with the utmost care, compassion, and attention to detail regardless of social, racial, or economic status. Outside of medicine, Dr. Ortiz enjoys playing soccer, reading and hiking.
