Department of Surgery Welcomes Dr. Anastasia Kunac
The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson Department of Surgery is pleased to welcome Anastasia Kunac, MD, FACS, as an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgery’s Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns, and Acute Care Surgery Division.
Dr. Kunac received her medical degree in 2005, from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. After medical school, Dr. Kunac went to Brooklyn Hospital Center to complete a year-long General Surgery Internship from 2005-2006 and remained there for three years of General Surgery Residency from 2005-2008. She moved on to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey to complete her General Surgery Residency from 2008-2010. After completing her residency, Dr. Kunac completed a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship from 2010-2011 at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Medical School. She is board-certified in Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
Dr. Kunac joins us from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, where she held several leadership positions and brings with her a wealth of experience. Her leadership roles include Associate Program Director of the General Surgery Residency from 2014-2017, Program Director of the General Surgery Residency from 2017-2021, Vice Chair of Education from 2020-2021, and Vice Chair of Veteran Affairs since 2023. Her leadership extends beyond academic medicine, as she also served as the Co-Director of Surgical ICU at University Hospital, Newark, NJ from 2013-2016, and as the Chief of Surgical Critical Care for the Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care System from 2021-2024.
She has published 45 articles, is involved in research as the principal investigator on eight grant projects and is an active member of 14 national organizations/societies.
Dr. Kunac, a dedicated professional, also values her personal time. She is married with 2 sons ages 8 and 9. She enjoys spending time with her family and looks forward to exploring the natural beauty of Tucson by hiking the trails with her family and their German Shepherd Dog.
