Department of Surgery Welcomes New Assistant Professor, Dr. Stephen Niemiec

The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson Department of Surgery is delighted to welcome Stephen Niemiec, MD, to the Division of Pediatric Surgery as Assistant Professor of Surgery. In addition to his faculty appointment, Dr. Niemiec will provide surgical care at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson and contribute to the training of medical students and residents in pediatric surgery.

Dr. Niemiec is a fellowship-trained pediatric surgeon. He completed his medical degree at the University of California – San Diego School of Medicine, followed by general surgery residency at University of California – San Diego, where he served as Administrative Chief Resident and received multiple honors, including the Golden Scalpel Teaching Award and induction into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He completed fellowship training in pediatric surgery at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center where he received the Frank L. Coulson, Jr. Award for Clinical Excellence.

During his training, Dr. Niemiec also completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at Children’s Hospital Colorado under Kenneth Liechty, MD, leading translational and clinical outcomes research in congenital diaphragmatic hernia, duodenal atresia, and myelomeningocele. He has published extensively on innovative approaches to fetal and neonatal surgery, nanoparticle-based therapeutics, and improving perioperative outcomes for critically ill infants. He has presented his work nationally at meetings of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, American College of Surgeons, and American Surgical Congress.

Dr. Niemiec’s clinical interests span the breadth of pediatric and neonatal surgery, with particular expertise in complex congenital anomalies, minimally invasive techniques including robotic surgery, and multidisciplinary care of infants and children with surgical conditions. He is passionate about surgical education and has been recognized repeatedly for his excellence in teaching and mentorship.

Dr. Niemiec looks forward to collaborating with the University of Arizona and Banner – University Medical Center Tucson faculty, staff, and trainees to provide state-of-the-art surgical care for children and families across Arizona and the surrounding region.
