Pancreas Transplant

The Pancreas Transplant Program at the University of Arizona offers experts in a range of transplant options for patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and collaborates closely on all clinical and research initiatives.

We perform pancreas transplants in all three categories:

  • Simultaneously with a kidney transplant (SPK) in uremic patients.
  • Pancreas after successful kidney transplant (PAK) in post-uremic patients on insulin but not dialysis.
  • Pancreas transplant alone (PTA) in nonuremic patients with brittle diabetes (e.g., patients on insulin with near normal kidney function).

Transplant patients can be referred by both nephrologists and endocrinologists, who work with us as part of our multidisciplinary team. Our experts include specialists in transplant surgery, transplant nephrology, urology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, pain management, pathology, and radiology as well as dietitians and social workers.
