The mission of the Division of the Surgical Oncology in the Department of Surgery is to provide quality care to the patient with solid malignancies. Quality care means full implementation of the steps involved with the care of the patient with cancer, i.e. screening and prevention, early detection, diagnosis, staging, local and systemic treatment, follow up and rehabilitation, and palliative care. The areas of special expertise include breast cancer, melanoma and other skin tumors, sarcomas, and cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, especially esophagus, liver, pancreas, and rectal cancers. The Division of Surgical Oncology provides surgical education and the majority of the index cases for the training of our residents and students in the areas of Surgery and Surgical Oncology.
All Surgical Oncologist perform their activities in multidisciplinary clinics. Weekly Tumor Boards are held in breast, colorectal areas, melanoma, sarcoma, and hepatobiliary. The division continues its leadership in the multidisciplinary treatment of patients with malignancies and more recently developed a new Community Tumor Board and is a key player in community and statewide awareness. New collaborative ventures are being undertaken to include other area hospitals and new outpatient clinics are being opened in the outlying areas close to the metro Tucson.
The Arizona Cancer Center is a “National Cancer Institute-recognized Comprehensive Cancer Center”: we are one of only 40 cancer centers in the country to have received this designation. The brand new Peter and Paula Fasseas Cancer Clinic has opened to provide comprehensive oncology services from outpatient treatments to lab services and ongoing care.
We all share some common outlooks within this division – education, outreach and compassionate quality care for all our patients and will continue to flourish in these aspects.
“Our mission is if we want to make a difference, we should give more than we take.”
