Ventana Research Lecture on Prostate Cancer Pathways

Mon, 11/13/2017 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm

SPEAKER: Cindy K. Miranti, PhD, Professor, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, UA College of Medicine – Tucson
TOPIC: "PTEN Loss Disrupts a CREB-Dependent Differentiation Pathway during Prostate Cancer Oncogenesis"

Monday, Nov. 13, 2017 | Noon - 1:00 p.m.
Auditorium 5104 ABCD, Ventana Medical Systems, 1910 E. Innovation Park Dr., Tucson, AZ 85755

Through the Science Exchange Collaborative with Ventana Medical Systems, University of Arizona faculty will have access to distinguished speakers Ventana periodically invites to Tucson. The Collaborative's next lecture will be delivered by Cindy K. Miranti, PhD, who is a professor of cellular and molecular medicine at the University of Arizona. Dr. Miranti's presentation will focus on a newly identified transcriptional program in differentiation and tumorigenesis that is driven by the loss of tumor suppressor protein (PTEN). It is speculated that this transcriptional program can define a potential lethal subset of prostate cancer.

The American Cancer Society estimates that 161,360 new cases of prostate cancer and 26,730 deaths from the disease will occur in 2017 alone. About one in seven men will experience prostate cancer diagnosis in their  lifetime and about one in 39 will die due to invasive and metastatic disease. The pathways that promote prostate cancer development and progression remain unknown. This limited understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which oncogenes transform human prostate cells is a critical barrier to the progress of treating prostate cancer.

Due to limited space, these seminars are available to the first 20 UA faculty members who RSVP. To RSVP, please contact Matt Peters at mwpeters@email.arizona.edu

Visitors coming from the UA with MD degrees need to sign a form to be in compliance with the Sunshine Act.
